Computer Diagnostics

Every vehicle built since 1996 has been equipped with an On-Board Diagnostics System that monitors engine performance. Discrepancies in performance levels are reported through your vehicle’s computer system, and store the corresponding repair code, which can be accessed by us.

Slow-cranking, rough idling, stalling, knocking, or pinging while accelerating are all signs that you should seek engine repairs or engine diagnostics to determine the full extent of your engine trouble. A decrease in gas mileage and detectable loss of power during acceleration are also signs of an impending engine tune-up or engine repair service.

Once the “check engine” or “service engine” light is displayed, your next step should be to seek out an engine diagnostic service or an engine tune-up. Engine warning lights help alert drivers to minor issues before they become major repairs, and allows us to gather helpful information about the operating condition of your engine.

The insights obtained during an engine diagnostic will determine the extent of suggested engine repairs. The most common diagnostic trouble codes are generated in response to malfunctions in the powertrain.

Check Engine Lights

The check engine light often illuminates when sensors detect some minor trouble, such as a failed sensor, a misfire or even a loose gas cap, all of which can be fixed quickly. Or it could mean something far more serious is wrong in the heart of the engine itself.

However, if you ignore it, that problem will grow worse and more expensive to fix.

For example, that failed sensor could develop into a malfunctioning catalytic converter, a much more costly part to replace. As soon as that light turns on, call us for check engine light repair.

Other Dashboard Warning Lights

Besides the check engine light, your dash is home to a variety of other warning lights.

n many modern vehicles, dashboard warnings are color-coded. Yellow, orange, and red generally tell motorists to seek service shortly. When the text or symbol flashes, drivers should seek service immediately. Green and blue alerts also exist, and these are intended as informational pop-ups meant to inform you that something is in operation.

Some of these include the tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light, anti-lock braking system (ABS) light, oil light, engine temperature light, battery light, alternator light, and more. If any dash warning lights come on, head to our shop for expert computer auto diagnostics. We'll have you in and out quickly, while ensuring your car is safe to drive and performing as best as possible.

Tires operating below inflation standards put the overall performance of your vehicle and the safety of your passengers at risk.

There are two types of Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems in existence today:

Direct and Indirect.

A Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System uses sensors on the inside tire assembly to transmit tire pressure information to your vehicle’s computer. (TPMS)

An Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System gauges tire pressure through your vehicle’s Anti-lock Braking System (ABS)

TPMS Warning Lights

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) helps increase your safety on the road by improving your vehicle’s maneuverability, decreasing the tread wear of your tires, reducing your vehicle’s braking distance, and improving your vehicle’s fuel economy.

All TPMS systems require regular maintenance in order to meet maximum performance standards, which requires all vehicles to be equipped with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System.

Your vehicle’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) continuously monitors the air pressure in your tires. When there is an instance of low tire pressure, or if the tire pressure drops below the manufacturer’s recommended level of tire pressure, the TPMS will detect and report the discrepancy by illuminating an indicator light on the dashboard of your vehicle.

When the TPMS light flashes on the dashboard, you should check your tire pressure, inflate the affected tire to the level indicated by the manufacturer,

During a TPMS maintenance service, we will run a series of tests to ensure that the system is operating both correctly and at maximum efficiency. If we uncover damage to the system or its accompanying components, we may need to replace valve cores, valve nuts, seals, seal washers, or valve caps.

If you are in need of TPMS repairs, maintenance, or replacement services, or if you are in need of a TPMS installation service, then contact us today.

ABS Warning Lights

An Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring System gauges tire pressure through your vehicle’s Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) by using speed sensors to measure the rotational speed of each wheel (as tire pressure decreases, the rolling distance decreases, and the rotational speed increases).

An illuminated ABS light often means there’s an issue with a wheel speed sensor, or problem with connections and wiring that could prevent the anti-lock braking system from activating.

Battery Light

The Battery Charge Indicator light means that the car’s charging system is short of power or is not charging properly. It normally indicates a problem with the battery itself or the alternator.

Coolant Temperature Light

The coolant temperature warning lets you know your car is running too hot. This could be caused by a broken water pump, low coolant levels in the radiator, a leaking or burst coolant hose, or even damage to the radiator itself. These are serious issues and could lead to much bigger engine problems if ignored. Driving an overheated car is not only unsafe, it also risks permanently ruining your car.

Oil Pressure Warning

An illuminated oil pressure light could indicate something as simple as your car telling you it needs its oil topped off. More seriously, it could mean a leak in the engine, or worn parts like a blown piston ring or broken oil pump. If the engine's dipstick shows oil levels are low and adding oil turns the light off, then you're in luck.

If that doesn't do the trick, or the light comes on shortly after you've added oil, it's smart to get the issue checked as soon as possible. Driving for extended periods with an oil pressure warning light on is another sure-fire way of causing big repair bills down the road.

If any dash warning lights come on, head to our shop for expert computer auto diagnostics. We'll have you in and out quickly, while ensuring your car is safe to drive and performing as best as possible.
